Synthesis of epicyclic gear trains for automotive automatic transmissions

The kinematic structure of epicyclic gear trains (EGTs) is derived from graph representations of these gear trains. The synthesis process is based on an algorithm that generates admissible epicyclic gear trains with up to ten links. This algorithm enables designers to design auto gear trains that have higher performance and better engine-drive wheel balance.
In this paper, we present a MATLAB optimization technique for determining the gear ratios of epicyclic transmission mechanisms. We also enumerate the number of teeth for all gears. Then, we estimate the overall velocity ratios of the obtained EGTs. Then, we analyze the feasibility of the proposed epicyclic gear trains for automotive automatic transmissions by comparing their structural characteristics.
A six-link epicyclic gear train is depicted in the following functional diagram. Each link is represented by a double-bicolor graph. The numbers on the graph represent the corresponding links. Forging spur gears is one of the most important processes of automotive transmission components. The manufacturing process is complex and involves several steps, such as blank spheroidizing, hot forging, annealing, phosphating, and saponification.
